Michael Collins "Landscape and Industry" and Essay
Michael Collin's Landscape and Industry looks at the various and industries in our daily world. Collins wanted to look at and explore the ideas as to how contemporary art can gain influences from either early pictures that were used as records and also 19th century naturalist paintings that provide detail and a conceptual insight into many thoughts and ideas of landscape and industry.
Michael had deduced that a photograph provides a record of a subject with one meaning and idea showcased in the work and that the relationship, close observations and readings of a subject can open an individuals vision of such subject to be limitless. He continues to look at the idea of just observing before making images in his work Landscape and Industry. Michael believes strongly that just from observing your subject for a period of time you already learn way more than you would ever know if you just studied some images you quickly captured. He wants to understand that a photo is more than just a document but a visual art providing clarity and research.
In my opinion, these images he has shot, you can tell he has spent an elaborate time at these locations, understanding key points of interests, what provides detail and also how he can create an interesting visual show for people viewing his work to be gripped and engaged. The colour pallet i find to be quite dull and grey but provides the images with so much character due to a lot of them places being abandoned or very rarely used. In a way he has documented the site but keeping it visually appealing for his audience.
In conclusion, i find that if i slow down my process and really consider the aspects and character of my subject i can create not just a document but something that is engaging for anyone viewing my images. I shall continue to read more into some of Michael Collins other work in my own time in order to broaden my photographic understanding and try to emulate the care and technique he shows in my own work.
