Paul Gaffney "Perigee"
Gaffney spent a period of time walking through the Luxembourgish Ardennes documenting what he discovered and viewed while walking through these settings. After some consideration he progressed to re-visiting these paths but once nightfall with the capabilities of photographing under the full moon.
This gave Gaffney's images a ominous glow that created a whole different mood to these specific images. In my opinion the images become almost this unrealistic fantasy in which any sort of story could be told. Compared to the stillness and untouched beauty that an early morning or sunset glow can bring. Where wildlife has either just awaken or have become to settle down to survive the perilous night. From the night time photos you begin to gain this understanding that maybe these nature reserves aren't actually non-man made and that the weather and minimal human presence has carefully constructed this setting that is a highly man- made environment in order to preserve it's entire existence.
Perigee accredits to the moment in the moons orbit in which the moon is closest to the earth. But Gaffney has constructed images that has light can almost barely discernible to the human eye. His work becomes not just about his extraordinary image making but a combination of his own intuition, chance and with the ultimate project aim of capturing a connection and stillness within these enchanting locations. Perigee connects with an individual not by showing off a large visual perception of the "landscape" but more on how your own body can react and respond to these unusual views of what would been seen as a calming natural utopia at times.
In my own work i find that i should try to emulate the idea of rather than capturing multiple new areas of the woodland, is should focus more on how these areas and change and evolve throughout a time of day and how the mood of the image can deviate from image to image.
